Quilting workshop

As part of our Memories of Migration series, we are offering a program to enable family members of different generations to tell their family’s migration story in a creative way. This 6-session workshop, run in conjunction with Queens Library’s Older Adult Services, will lead family partners through storytelling, simple electronics and textile art making.

During the first three sessions, family pairs will be instructed on how to record their stories onto an electronic device that will then be wired into the fabric they choose for their piece of the quilt. Teaching artist Karen Fitzgerald will lead participants through the next three sessions of quilt-making. The result will be a combined story quilt that will be displayed in a public exhibit at the Fresh Meadows Community Library. Participants will take home their pieces of the quilt following the exhibition.

The sessions will be held on six Saturday afternoons — Sept. 16 and 23, and Oct. 7, 14, 21 and 28 — from 2:30 to 4:30 pm at the Fresh Meadows branch. Registration is limited. To sign up, call the Fresh Meadows Library at (718) 454-7272; for more information, contact Lori Wallach at lori.wallach@queenslibrary.org or (718) 990-8532.
